My Three Favorite Squarespace SEO Hacks (as a Squarespace SEO Pro)

Everyone loves a hack, you know, those clever tricks that are easy to do but have a solid impact and kind of feel like a cheat code.

As a Squarespace SEO expert, I have all kinds of Squarespace SEO hacks up my sleeve and I share a lot of them in my course, aptly named Squarespace SEO Hacks.

I thought it would be fun to share a few of my favorite go-to hacks that improve visibility in search engines like Google, that I implement on my own site as well as clients’ Squarespace websites.

Squarespace SEO Hack #1: Create a rich, descriptive footer “blurb.”

Your footer blurb should explains exactly who you are, what you do, and who you offer those services for. If you are in a specific location, I recommend mentioning that (notice I included Portland, Oregon in mine), and it’s worth linking to your Google Business Profile as well. Use just these few sentences to paint a complete picture of what your business is all about. This is effective brand management and can improve your search engine optimization as well.

I do this for every single client—it’s simply that effective.

There’s a reason I implement this on every client site. It’s great brand alignment, looks super professional, and is good for Google, too!

Squarespace SEO Hack #2: Link Your Own Website Content Strategically

The vast majority of time, when I audit a client website, I flag the sites as having “poor internal linking” or “no internal linking strategy.” This is a problem because it means that neither your website visitors nor Google and other search engines can understand how your content is related. So, it’s viewed as a series of siloed pages, not a rich, immersive, and contextual website.

Poor internal linking can also dramatically impact what we call “bounce rate,” that is the percentage of visitors who come to a website and promptly leave. When we have a solid internal linking strategy, we improve that bounce rate and our site visitors tend to browse more pages on our websites. This, in turn, improves conversion rates, meaning the percentage of visitors who take an action on your site.

Now, don’t go running around randomly adding links to your pages and posts to improve your SEO—it simply doesn’t work that way. You need to do so strategically, and be mindful of the verbiage you use in your links. Basically, make sure the language you use signals to the visitor what to expect when they click the link.

Squarespace SEO Hack #3: Be Hidden Element Savvy

We love clever elements in Squarespace, such as the accordion block. I use that one quite frequently on my own website. This element allows you to hide lengthy content behind a click, helping your pages be tidy and readable. Unfortunately, there are also SEO implications as well.

Here’s the reality about hidden elements and Squarespace: They are incredibly useful from a design perspective, and yet most of the time, the content inside the accordions are skipped when Google and other bots scan your site.

This does not, under any circumstances, mean that you universally should quit using them. Instead, what I want you to do is be smart about when you do use accordion blocks. When I use them, I always make sure that none of the text inside of those accordions is essential for Google to understand that page. I also know that if I use them for FAQ content, they will likely not receive the rich content treatment that other question and answer format content does, because of the answers are hidden.

My tip: Read through the page with the accordions and see if it makes sense without the hidden content. If it does, fabulous! If it doesn’t, restructure the page to make the content visible like normal text.
