The Original Squarespace SEO Expert (Seriously!)

Ready to rank on page one of Google?

Spammy and even scammy methods are not uncommon and many companies’ SEO programs are designed to complicate ranking in Google and confuse you.

Further, lots of “SEO Experts” will claim you can’t perform well in Google if you use a Squarespace site—but this is simply misinformation designed to sell you website migration services.

I’m on a mission to change all that.

90+ percent of online experiences start in a search engine. If you ignore search, you ignore your ideal audience.

A well-designed SEO marketing funnel feels a bit like magic. Except it’s not—it’s all strategy that matches your business goals. Google currently drives 1000% of the website traffic that social media does—it’s simply a reality that your potential clients are looking for what you offer. When your Squarespace site is optimized correctly, and you have an excellent content strategy, they’re more likely to find you. Savvy companies to get in front of these problem-aware searchers right when they're needed.

Here's the big reason why marketing, and SEO specifically, so often doesn't work for what I call "knowledge businesses" such as consultants, coaches, creatives, attorneys, and financial folks like CFPs. I call this the "White T-Shirt Problem."

Are you your industry’s best kept secret? Let’s change that.

When my team and I help you get found in Google, you should know:

  • My company, Sarah Moon & Co, was the first agency to offer specialized SEO services exclusively for Squarespace users

  • SEO is so critical to me that it's the fuel for my framework, the Alignthority™ System

  • Your SEO strategy is a beginning, not an ending

"I approached Sarah because I was looking to expand my marketing strategy and start taking SEO seriously. She audited my Squarespace site and did keyword research to help me rank higher in Google's search engine! After the audit, Sarah gave me actionable steps that took the overwhelm out of SEO. I'm now ranking on the first page for [my target keywords] and get traffic and leads every day because of her help! Sarah will always be the SEO expert I go to for guidance and website/content strategy!"

FAQs About Squarespace SEO

SEO is an overwhelming topic for many people, so I’ve answered some of the most common questions I get. Of course, if you have questions not addressed here, simply reach out and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.

  • While it can be easier to use certain pluginss to rank on a WordPress website, we have found that our Squarespace clients perform just as well in Google as our WordPress clients. It’s all about knowing the nuances of the platform and using it effectively. Squarespace does not require third party plugins to do well, which I great news for site owners who don't want to be thinking about more and more tech!

Grab our free guide to Squarespace SEO over here.

  • Increasing traffic on a Squarespace website can include any of the following tactics:

    1. Keyword research.

    2. Competitive research.

    3. Improving written content to more efficiently target searches.

    4. Improving headlines so Google better understands what your site is all about.

    5. Optimizing the backend of your Squarespace website.

    6. Creating a search optimized topic cluster.

    7. Fixing technical errors.

    8. Optimizing images.

    9. Implementing Schema (this is a special type of structured data that Google likes).

    10. Fixing broken links and other issues.

The list goes on, and our philosophy is that we create a custom strategy for each client that’s aligned with their business goals.

  • I use a specific method of blogging that’s designed to improve your SEO through thought leadership. This is a wonderful way to attract more perfectly aligned clients and grow your audience. You can have good SEO without blog content, but I recommend that for best results you commit to content of some kind, whether it’s a blog, podcast, or YouTube channel.

  • All websites are likely to have some errors in Google Search Console. Squarespace in particular typically results in a duplicate content warning because of the way the platform uses tags and categories. This can be fixed by asking Google to not index those pseudo pages.

I have an article that goes into this issue further that you can read here.

  • The rates for SEO services vary widely depending on the scope of the project, how much experience the consultant has (our team has collective experience equalling decades), how complex your website site, how competitive your keywords are, and more. Items such as content creation, conversion optimization, and more can all impact the pricing.

  • We believe that coaches are underutilizing SEO! The vast majority of coaches have absolutely no SEO but often have loads of social content that can be repurposed into incredible SEO-first thought leadership.

In short, there are lots of opportunities for coaches to reach problem-aware leads that don’t currently know about them. Want to expand the impact of your coaching practice? Start with SEO!

If you’d like to read more about coaches and SEO, I have written an in-depth article on the subject.

  • Your Google Business Profile (GBP) can help with SEO! This is because it often has keyword rich user generated content (reviews and questions) and can help Google better understand what your business is about.

I often help our clients optimize their GBP as part of our work together.

  • It depends! Sites typically start to show up within weeks, but if you have a very competitive niche it can take months.

  • Nope! No plugins are needed to correctly optimize a Squarespace website for search.  I do not currently recommend any SEO "plugin" type tools for Squarespace as they're unnecessary and add to the complexity of your site without benefit.

  • Squarespace websites, when designed properly, should not be slow! Here are some of our top tips for speeding up your Squarespace site:

    1. Compress your images using a tool like ShortPixel.

    2. Remove unused coding (check with your designer first).

    3. Use text instead of images whenever possible.

    4. Avoid more than 60 blocks on a Squarespace page.

    5. Make sure you have SSL turned on.

    6. Reduce the number of fonts on your Squarespace website.

Remember that many of the speed test websites will only reward plain HTML pages with their highest scores—these tests are not designed for complex content management systems. Also, don’t forget that speed is just one of the 200+ ranking factors in Google!

  • First of all, don’t worry! It’s very normal to see different numbers on different analytics programs. What you want to pay attention to are the trends. Is your traffic going up or down? What’s most popular? What keywords are people using? If you see very different results in these trends, then it’s worth digging in more deeply. Otherwise, don’t stress about these differences.

Pro tip: You may enjoy our website analytics guide over here.

  • I recommend all professional designers get familiar with the basics of Squarespace SEO so they can provide clear guidance to their clients and avoid common problems. You don’t have to be an SEO expert to be a designer, though! Just learn the fundamentals!

  • In general, I'm seeing 7.1 sites perform better than 7.0 sites, but there are so many variables that it’s challenging to make an apples to apples comparison. With that said, it’s probably time to consider upgrading to 7.1!

  • Each client has a custom, tailor-made plan, but in short, we typically tackle:

    1. Content strategy

    2. Technical optimizations

    3. Blogging strategy

    4. SEO titles/descriptions

    5. Conversion optimization

    6. Headline optimization

    7. Google Business Profile optimization

    8. Technical fixes

I do not conduct backlink building for clients, as those tactics are often spammy.
