I’m thrilled to announce the launch of a new website for Kelly Swails, whose business Birth Devi is a maternity services and yoga teacher training company in Yonkers, New York and serves families in the tri-state area.
Like many of my clients, Kelly wanted a website that had a different feel from what is common in her field. So, choices of imagery, colors and style were incredibly important. We worked through a number of drafts, and once we hit on the key image for homepage, the visuals just came together.
This is a heavily photoshopped image that was inspired by the both Kelly’s logo and the notion of Venus symbolism. That combined with the moon phase icons we developed created a distinctive look that we carried through the entire site.
This also influenced our type treatment developed as part of my “lightweight branding” service I include in a lot of my design projects. (Kelly already has a logo, but we developed other elements, such as typography, colors, and icons that enhanced the overall look at feel of the site so it would feel cohesive.) The overall feel is soft and welcoming.
The other big piece of Kelly’s website was her events management. We opted to use Squarespace’s built in functionality, and did–as is common–run up against some of the system’s limitations. Namely, repeating and multi-day events are effectively impossible to automate, so we had to improvise. Hopefully, Squarespace will improve this system in future updates. (There are some solid alternatives you can use, but they do come at an additional cost, which doesn’t always make sense–the web is really about tradeoffs and this is an excellent example.)
